Why I choose Airbnb as a Mom

Hotel Selfie in Asheville, NC – 2018

Before I had kids I was told all the time to travel I wouldn’t he able to do it as much once kids came along. But honestly, thats just not how I was raised. While I haven’t mustered up the courage to fly with the girls yet, we have still found ways to travel ever since our oldest was around 8 months old or so. They might be in a closer radius, we have not gone much further than 8hr road trip yet, but we still get around and Airbnb has made it that much easier for us to have a good time as a family.

I didn’t really use Airbnbs very much back then, and would get a hotel room but would sometimes feel stressed, especially at night with a baby. I mean let’s be honest not everyone is like us, a family with a baby that can/will cry at night. Some people are there to relax and that’s not easy when it’s 2 am and you have a screaming baby in the room next door(was usually the norm for us on the first night, thankfully has gotten better as girls got older). I usually would try to book a family-friendly venue since I’d hope that would involve more families with kids. I mean don’t get me wrong I’m not really someone who strives to make everyone happy but I try to give people the understanding I would like to receive myself. I recognize that what I’m ok with is not everyone’s cup of tea.

Ciui Family Reunion Cabin in Gatlinburg, TN 2021

So, after going on a couple group vacations with extended family where we used Airbnb or Vrbo we quickly realized the benefits.

Don’t get me wrong, there are pros and cons to everything. If you’re looking for a relaxing vacation where you don’t have to do any cooking or cleaning for yourself then this might not be your first choice. But if you’re like us and you enjoy your privacy and letting your kids be kids, well then…

And there are ways to make your trip easier too, plan easy quick meals or prep before your trip for less work or even get takeout if that’s your thing. Cleanup duty is done as a family and rather than figuring out a way to repack I’ll either put all the dirty clothes in one bag and the clean in the other or pack a trash bag to throw dirty clothes in, so much easier than trying to repack everything. It’s also important to be aware of what amenities are already provided, that way you avoid bringing things you don’t need.

So, to summarize, it’s private, you have the amenities of home (sometimes even nicer than what you have at home), and you get to let your kids be kids and not worry about other people. I mean don’t get me wrong my girls don’t run around screaming at the tops of the lungs(often), but I still don’t want to have to constantly shush them for being a little too loud just because we are conscious of the fact that there are other people or families in rooms above, next door, and/or below. I love that they can run and jump when they have the opportunity to and at the end of the day when they just konk out from pure exhaustion I know that they had fun too.

D.C Memorials And Tips

One of the main reasons tourists go to the United States Capital is to see the monuments and museums and everything else in between. I tried to post every day but there is so much to see and do that by the time I would get back to the hotel I was so exhausted that the last thing I wanted to do was sit in front of my laptop so I will be posting my pictures for D.C at spread out intervals throughout this week. But before I put up and photos from my adventures I feel the need to point out things I’ve learned on this vacation.

D.C Tips and tricks

  1. Take the metro!
    • It is one of the most affordable means of transportation and goes pretty much everywhere you would want to visit. You can get a day pass for $14.50 but you can only use that card on one day so we actually decided to get a ‘SmartTrip’ card and put 20$ on it and we used that for the course of our trip and even had some money left over at the end. We’re keeping the cards in case we go back at some point.
    • DO NOT take the metro between the hours of 7AM-9:30AM and 5PM-7PM you have to keep in mind that while YOU might be vacationing everyone else is not and unless you want to stand for the course of your subway ride (which believe me the locals make it look a LOT easier than it really is) you want to avoid these rush hour times.
  2. Wear comfortable shoes.
    • Believe me this is a must. We knew we would be walking a lot but we didn’t realize exactly how much. I have a fitbit now so I can tell you the first day we walked 7 miles and then after that every day was over 10miles worth of walking (~25,000 steps) so you definitely want to wear comfy shoes.
  3. Less Bags = Faster Entry
    • Every Smithsonian/National Museum has airport like security when you enter, your bag could be searched by a security guard or you will have to put it through an X-Ray machine just like airport security. The Holocaust museum even makes you sip any drinks that are open to prove that it is really water. If you don’t have a bag they let you go right though the big detector. If you’re traveling with a buddy like I was we ended up getting a backpack and then putting both of our things in there to get through the security lines faster.
  4. Look for Groupon deals, especially the hotel!
    • I was lucky enough to find my hotel deal on Groupon but I didn’t realize exactly how much it saved me until I got there. Many of the hotels can charge you for parking as well, in our case we stayed at the Sheraton in Arlington City and parking was $24 a night and the WiFi was also an additional charge. The Groupon deal covered all of these charges including the room fee. It saved us a lot of money!

That’s all I have at the moment if I think of some other things I learned I will definitely add them to this list. If anyone’s planning a trip to the D.C area and has any questions let me know!
